Rebecca A. Peterson

Associate

Rebecca A. Peterson dedicates her practice to shareholder rights litigation, focusing on merger and acquisition litigation.  Since joining the firm, Ms. Peterson has been part of multiple litigation teams that successfully protected shareholders' interests and obtained substantial benefits, including additional disclosures in shareholder solicitation materials.  She also has extensive discovery experience in complex litigation, including drafting and negotiating written discovery and related motion practice.  In addition, Ms. Peterson has been involved in multiple appeals in both federal and state courts.

Ms. Peterson has helped obtain great results for her clients.  She was part of a team that litigated and successfully upheld a comprehensive settlement for shareholders in In re Tenet Healthcare Corp. Derivative Litigation, No. 01098905 (Cal. Super Ct.–Santa Barbara County May 5, 2006), aff'd, No. B192252 (Cal. Ct. App. Sept. 20, 2007).  The settlement included the creation of a settlement fund of $51.5 million to be paid to Tenet, as well as adoption of substantial corporate governance reforms.  She also supported a team that was retained by the company's Special Litigation Committee to prosecute its claims relating to stock option backdating in In re Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. Derivative Litigation, No. 1:05CV041683 (Cal. Super. Ct.-Santa Clara County). 

Ms. Peterson received her Juris Doctor degree from the University of San Diego School of Law.  During law school, she served as a law clerk both for the Attorney's Office of Ramsey County in Minnesota and for the Attorney General's Office of the State of California in San Diego in the Writs, Trials and Appellate Division.  She also worked as a research assistant to Kevin Cole, current Dean of the University of San Diego School of Law.

Before attending law school, Ms. Peterson worked as a communications specialist and a lobbyist for North State Advisers, a governmental and public relations firm in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Ms. Peterson received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, with a concentration in Environmental Studies, from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.  While at St. Olaf, Ms. Peterson interned for the American Bar Association's Section of International Law in Washington D.C.
